52,105 governments · named from Census files

Every local government in the country, by its own name.

Counties, cities, towns, townships and school districts — each a separate unit of government with its own records and its own clerk, and each answering to the public-records act of the state it sits in.

3,116

Counties and equivalents

Active county governments and independent cities, from the Census 2020 FIPS file.

19,470

Incorporated places

Cities, towns, villages and boroughs with a functioning government. Census-designated places are excluded — they are statistical areas with no clerk to write to.

16,186

Towns and townships

Functioning minor civil divisions. Town government is a real layer in 20 states and in none of the other 30.

13,333

School districts

Unified, elementary and secondary districts. Each is its own unit of government with its own board, budget and records.

Where these names come from

The U.S. Census Bureau, retrieved 2026-08-22. Names, codes and geography come from the government’s own reference files rather than from anything Aletheca generated, which is the reason they can be printed at all.

FUNCSTAT = A only. Census-designated places and census county divisions are statistical areas with no government and are excluded — they cannot receive a request. That filter is the whole trick: a census-designated place looks exactly like a town in a name list and has no clerk, no council and no records officer. Publishing one as a filing target would put a letter in the post to nobody.

What Census does not publish is who handles records requests. So every jurisdiction here carries a real name and a real statute and no confirmed contact route — Aletheca confirms an address before the first letter goes to it, and records the confirmation as a public event.
